It may be the equivalent of Simurgh in Persian mythology who is also represented like a griffin with a dog body. But according to Vyacheslav Vsevolodovich Ivanov and Vladimir Toporov, the name comes from the Slavonic *Sedmor(o)-golvъ (“with seven heads”).
